DESCRIPTION OF VIRUSES

Family Caulimoviridae

Genus “Rice Tungro Bacilliform-like Viruses”

Genus “Rice Tungro Bacilliform-like Viruses”

Type Species

Rice tungro bacilliform virus

(RTBV)

Distinguishing Features

The sole species shares many of the distinguishing features of those in the genus Badnavirus. The genome differs in that it contains four ORFs, organized as shown in Figure 8. The genome nucleotide sequence has about 20-25% homology to the genomes of badnaviruses. Rice tungro bacilliform virus (RTBV) is transmitted by leafhoppers with the assistance of Rice tungro spherical virus (RTSV; genus Waikavirus; family Sequiviridae).

Similarities with Other Taxa

The bacilliform shape of the virions of “Rice tungro bacilliform-like viruses” and badnaviruses is like those of the virions of Alfalfa mosaic virus (genus Alfamovirus; family Bromoviridae) and Mushroom bacilliform virus (genus Barnavirus; family Barnaviridae) but these are smaller being up to 60  nm long and about 18  nm diameter.

Derivation of Names

Badna: sigla from bacilliform DNA viruses.

Caulimo: sigla from cauliflower mosaic virus.
