DESCRIPTION OF VIRUSES

Family Caulimoviridae

Genus “Soybean Chlorotic Mottle-like Viruses”

Genus “Soybean Chlorotic Mottle-like Viruses”

Type Species

Soybean chlorotic mottle virus

(SbCMV)

Distinguishing Features

Species in this genus have virions, and induce the formation of cytoplasmic inclusions, that are similar to those of species in the genera Caulimovirus, “Petunia vein clearing-like viruses” and “Cassava vein mosaic-like viruses”, but differ from them in their genome organization.

The genome has seven ORFs which have a different distribution in relation to the negative strand DNA priming site (zero position on map) from those in genomes of species in the genus Caulimovirus (Fig. 4).

List of Species Demarcation Criteria in the Genus

The criteria demarcating species in the genus are:

Differences in host ranges, and

Differences in genome nucleotide sequences of more than 50%,

Differences in gene product sequences.
