Type Species |
(CaMV) |
Members of this genus have particles and cytoplasmic inclusions similar to those of species in the genera “Soybean chlorotic mottle-like viruses”, “Petunia vein clearing-like viruses” and “Cassava vein mosaic-like viruses”, but differ from them in genome organization. Isometric particles are about 50 nm in diameter with a T = 7 (420 subunits) multilayered structure (Fig. 1).
Most species are transmitted in a semipersistent manner by aphids. Transmission requires a virus-encoded protein (aphid transmission factor) which is encoded by ORF2.
Virions occur in the cytoplasm, and in some cases in the nucleus. Cytoplasmic virions are associated with electron-dense proteinaceous inclusion bodies (for caulimoviruses, the product of ORF6). The product of ORF2 also forms inclusion bodies which are electron translucent. Inclusion bodies can be seen by light microscopy as well as by electron microscopy.
The genome contains six ORFs with the organization shown in Figure 2.
