DESCRIPTION OF VIRUSES

Family Luteoviridae

Genus Luteovirus

Genus Luteovirus

Type Species

Barley yellow dwarf virus - PAV

(BYDV-PAV)

Distinguishing features

Virion buoyant density in CsCl is 1.39-1.40  g/cm3; S20w is 106-118S. Genome size is from 5273  nts (BYDV-MAV) (partial sequence) to 5677  nts (BYDV-PAV). The genome RNA does not have a VPg. Genome properties are the key features. There is no ORF0 and frameshift from ORF1 into ORF2 occurs at the termination codon of ORF1. The translation products of ORF1 and ORF2 form replication-related proteins which are “carmovirus-like”. The length of the non-coding sequence between ORF2 and ORF3 is about 100  nts. There is no evidence for the presence of a genome-linked protein and translation is by a cap-independent mechanism.

Particles are proposed to have 180 subunits arranged in a T = 3 icosahedron.
