DESCRIPTION OF VIRUSES

Family Comoviridae

Genus Fabavirus

Genus Fabavirus

Type Species

Broad bean wilt virus 1

(BBWV-1)

Distinguishing Features

Capsids are constructed from two polypeptide species (Large and Small). Patchouli mild mosaic virus (PatMMV) RNA-2 is translated into a polyprotein, that is cleaved into the two CPs and a protein with Mr = 52 103 that is possibly involved in movement (Fig. 4). Fabaviruses have wide host ranges among dicotyledons and some families of monocotyledons. Symptoms are ringspots, mottle, mosaic, distortion, wilting and apical necrosis. In nature, fabaviruses are transmitted nonpersistently by aphids. In other respects, fabaviruses are similar to comoviruses.

List of Species Demarcation Criteria in the Genus

The criteria demarcating species in the genus are:

No pseudo-recombination between components possible,

Differences in antigenic reactions.

Using polyclonal rabbit antisera in agar gel diffusion tests Broad bean wilt virus 1 (BBWV-1) and Lamium mild mosaic virus (LMMV) differ by eight two-fold steps. No reassortment has been demonstrated between these viruses.
