Type Species |
(Q) |
Viruses contain the longer version of the genome. The extra RNA encodes a C terminal extension of the capsid protein arising by occasional suppression of the capsid gene termination codon. The read-through protein present at about 18 copies in the capsid is necessary for infection. There is no separate lysis gene. Cell lysis is ascribed to the A protein. Genome length varies between 4,217 nts for Enterobacteria phage Q (Q) and 4,276 nts for Enterobacteria phage SP (SP) (Fig. 3).
Antigenic specificity is distinct from that of members of the genus Levivirus.
List of Species Demarcation Criteria in the Genus
The major difference between the two species (formerly called subgroup III and IV) is a 90 nts deletion in the maturation protein gene of Enterobacteria phage Q (Q), corresponding to a long bifurcated hairpin. Furthermore, the percentage of amino acid or nucleotide sequence identity is dramatically lower between species than between strains within species. Species can be differentiated immunologically. Species can also be distinguished by sequence-specific antisense probes.
Official virus species names are in italics. Tentative virus species names, alternative names ( ), strains or serotypes are not italicized. Virus names and assigned abbreviations ( ) are:
