DESCRIPTION OF VIRUSES

Family Partitiviridae

Genus Chrysovirus

Genus Chrysovirus

Type Species

Penicillium chrysogenum virus

(PcV)

Virion Properties

Morphology

Virions are isometric and 35-40  nm in diameter (Fig. 3).

Physicochemical and Physical Properties

Virion density in CsCl is 1.35  g/cm3 and S20w is 145-150S.

Nucleic Acid

The virions typically contain three unrelated and separately encapsidated dsRNA segments of about 3  kbp each. Some virus isolates contain four dsRNA segments. The genomes are presumed to be bipartite and additional dsRNA segments are tentatively considered satellite or defective dsRNAs.

Proteins

The capsids are made up of single polypeptide species (Mr 125 103). RNA polymerase activity is present.

List of Species Demarcation Criteria in the Genus

The criteria to differentiate species in the genus are:

host range,

size of dsRNA segments, and

serological relationships.
