Type Species |
(SaHV-2) |
The nucleotide or predicted amino acid sequences of the members of the genus form a distinct lineage within the subfamily. Many members productively infect fibroblasts, often of multiple species, in vitro. Members have been isolated from a wide range of mammalian species. Latent infection has been reported in T or B lymphocytes.

Official virus species names are in italics. Tentative virus species names, alternative names ( ), strains or serotypes are not italicized. Virus names, genome sequence accession numbers [ ], and assigned abbreviations ( ) are:

6 (Desrosiers, Sasseville, Czajak, Zhang, Mansfield, Kaur, Johnson, Lackner and Jung, 1997).
7 EHV-2 was originally called ‘equine cytomegalovirus’. Since the virus is a member of the Gammaherpesvirinae (Telford, Watson, Aird, Perry and Davison, 1995) this name is misleading and has not been included as a synonym.

9 In the previous ICTV Report ‘Herpesvirus sylvilagus’ was assumed to be identical to ‘Cottontail rabbit herpesvirus’ and both were defined as Leporid herpesvirus 1. These viruses differ in their genome structure ( Cebrian, Berthelot and Laithier, 1989; Medveczky, Geck, Clarke, Byrnes, SullivanMedveczky, 1989). The virus known as ‘Herpesvirus sylvilagus’ is now named Leporid herpesvirus 3.
