DESCRIPTION OF VIRUSES

Family Herpesviridae

Genus Simplexvirus

Genus Simplexvirus

Type Species

Human herpesvirus 1

(HHV-1)

Distinguishing Features

Nucleotide sequences or predicted amino acid sequences of members of the genus form a distinct lineage within the subfamily. The viruses have a broad host cell range in vitro with a relatively rapid cytolytic productive cycle. Latent infection is established in neurones. Most members of the genus are viruses of human or non-human primates. Members of the genus may have serological cross-reaction with other members.
