Figure 1 (A) Diagram of a virion section with lipid membranes, capsid and nucleoprotein core visualized of African swine fever virus (ASFV) particle. (B) Thin section, (C) cryo-section and (D) a negative contrast electron micrograph of ASFV particles. The arrows indicate the membrane components of the virus; pm = plasma membrane. (EMs were provided by Dr Sharon Brookes, IAH Pirbright.) The bar represents 200  nm.

Figure 2 Genome organization map of African swine fever virus (ASFV) strain Ba71V. Numbers at the right end indicate the nucleotide position. Terminal inverted repeats are shown as thicker lines and vertical bars indicate EcoRI restriction sites. ORFs are represented as arrows in their corresponding reading frames. The different patterns indicate the following groups of ORFs: multigene families (gray), nucleic acid metabolism (black), protein modification (dotted), structural proteins (vertical stripes), membrane protein (thick outline), signal peptide-containing proteins (thick outlined arrowhead) and proteins mediating virus-host interactions (oblique stripes). Proteins belonging to two different groups show a double pattern. (Reprinted from Yanez, Rodriguez, Nogal, Yuste, Enriquez, Rodriguez and Vinuela, 1995 with permission from Academic Press.)
