DESCRIPTION OF VIRUSES

Family Poxviridae

Genus Entomopoxvirus C

Genus Entomopoxvirus C

Type Species

Chironomus luridus entomopoxvirus

(CLEV)

Distinguishing Features

The genus includes poxviruses of Diptera. Virions are brick-shaped, about 320 230 110  nm in size, with two lateral bodies and a biconcave core. DNA is about 250-380  kbp in size.

List of Species Demarcation Criteria in the Genus

The chief species demarcation criterion is currently host range. However, as molecular information becomes available, genetic content, gene order and restriction enzyme polymorphism (RFLPs) within specific genes or within larger selected regions of the genome and cross-hybridization studies are likely to become increasingly important. Again, serological criteria, such as plaque neutralization can be considered.
