DESCRIPTION OF VIRUSES

Family Poxviridae

Genus Entomopoxvirus B

Genus Entomopoxvirus B

Type Species

Amsacta moorei entomopoxvirus

(AMEV)

Distinguishing Features

The genus includes poxviruses of Lepidoptera and Orthoptera. Virions are ovoid, about 350 250  nm in size, with a sleeve-shaped lateral body and cylindrical core. Surface globular units are 40  nm in diameter. DNA is about 225  kbp in size with covalently closed termini and inverted terminal repetitions. The G+C content is about 18.5%. Viruses produce a 115  kDa occlusion body composed of spheroidin protein.

List of Species Demarcation Criteria in the Genus

The main species demarcation criterion is currently host range, however genetic content, gene order, restriction enzyme polymorphism (RFLPs) within specific genes or within larger selected regions of the genome and nucleic acid cross-hybridization analysis are likely to become increasingly important. Based on the complete genome sequence of Melanoplus sanguinipes entomopoxvirus (MSEV) (below), the gene order and homology and content differs significantly from that of Amsacta moorei entomopoxvirus (AMEV), Heliothis armigeria entomopoxvirus (HAVE), Choristoneura biennis entomopoxvirus (CBED) and Choristoneura fumiferana entomopoxvirus (CFEV) suggesting that Entomopoxvirus B viruses, so classified based on morphological criteria may need reclassification. Serological criteria based on plaque neutralization may also be used.
