DESCRIPTION OF VIRUSES

Family Poxviridae

Genus Entomopoxvirus A

Genus Entomopoxvirus A

Type Species

Melolontha melolontha entomopoxvirus

(MMEV)

Distinguishing Features

The genus includes poxviruses of Coleoptera. Virions are ovoid, about 450 250  nm in size, with one lateral body and a unilateral concave core. Surface globular units are 22  nm in diameter. DNA is about 260-370  kbp in size.

List of Species Demarcation Criteria in the Genus

The primary species demarcation criterion is currently host range recognizing that molecular information is limited and available for only one member. In the future, genetic content, gene order, restriction enzyme polymorphisms (RFLPs) between members within a defined region of the genome and cross-hybridization analysis is likely to be useful. Serological criteria including plaque neutralization tests and virus neutralization are also used.
