Virions are brick-shaped, about 300 250 200 nm. DNA is about 175 kbp in size with inverted terminal repeats of about 5 kbp. Virus forms foci or plaques in pig kidney cell culture (one-step growth is about 3 days at 37°C) and plaques in swine testes cell cultures. Virus causes asymptomatic generalized skin disease in swine that appears to be localized to epithelial cells and draining lymph nodes. Virus neutralizing antibodies are not usually detected. Mechanical transmission by arthropods (probably lice) is suspected. Viruses have a worldwide distribution. Rabbits can be infected experimentally; however serial transmission in rabbits is unsuccessful.
